Increasing Maize Yield for Smallholder Farmers in Misungwi District

Smallholder farmers in Misungwi District faced low maize productivity due to poor soil fertility, outdated farming practices, and limited access to quality inputs. Many were struggling with inconsistent yields and low market prices.

BACL Intervention

BACL introduced a tailored support package that included:

  • Soil testing and fertility analysis

  • Training on improved planting techniques

  • Access to certified maize seeds and quality fertilizers

  • Field monitoring through our agronomists

  • Harvest and post-harvest handling support

Results

  • Average maize yield increased from 1.2 tons/ha to 3.5 tons/ha.

  • Farmers reduced post-harvest losses by up to 40% using BACL’s improved storage practices.

  • Over 200 farmers gained skills in sustainable and modern crop management.

  • Household income increased significantly, improving food security in the community.

Impact

This project strengthened small-scale farmers’ capacity, increased regional maize supply, and demonstrated the power of technology-guided farming in rural Tanzania.
